The prize is awarded annually to a student who shows the greatest proficiency in third year or fourth year Linguistics units of study. The winner of the prize will receive $5000 and two runners-up will each be awarded $700. Students must be enrolled in third or fourth year of the Bachelor of Arts at the University of Sydney to be eligible for the award.
The 2023 Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize was won by Annie Zhang for her story ‘Who Rattles the Night?’, which was published in Overland. Zhang is a writer and editor, living on unceded Wangal land, and was a WestWords Western Sydney Emerging Writer Fellow in 2019. The judges and Overland would like to congratulate all the shortlisted writers.

The prestigious Sidney Hook Memorial Award recognizes national distinction by a single scholar in the scholarship of undergraduate teaching and leadership in the cause of liberal arts education. It is named in honor of the late Sidney Hook, a distinguished educator who devoted much of his life to the advancement of liberal arts education. The award is presented by the Sidney Hook Society, a group of alumni and friends of the University of Virginia who have contributed to the annual fund in support of the award.
A left-of-center foundation awards monetary prizes to journalism and public service. Its board of trustees includes Workers United President emeritus Bruce Raynor and celebrity Danny Glover, both of whom oppose anti-union efforts. The Hillman Foundation is led by the former president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America labor union, which was merged with Unite Here and SEIU to form Workers United.
The 2024 George Barrett Prize for Public Interest Law was won by Philippe Sands KC, who has dedicated his career to representing people with little money and power. He has fought to secure their basic civil rights, address the legacies of colonialism and protect the global environment. He is a true exemplar of the spirit and activism of George Barrett. The prize is sponsored by the Sidney Hillman Foundation and awarded by a panel of judges from the public, private and academic sectors. The winner received $35,000 and a plaque. The other finalists were Hilton Als writing for The New York Times and Ed Yong of The Atlantic. The citation reads:
